Phillip is currently at the University of Ottawa, researching the strength tradition in Quebec from the strongmen to the onset of bodybuilding, going from the 1830s to the 1950s. The specific area of interest, and the major lens used when researching, is Quebec politics, nationalism, and the language issue. The PhD seeks to analyze the evolution or transition of these strength sports and how they relate to the nationalist sentiments portrayed in Quebec politics.


Conor is currently researching the Irish interest in physical culture from 1893 to 1939 at University College Dublin. Covering a range of areas, including but not limited to military training, physical education in schools, state sponsored programmes and of course, recreational training, the PhD seeks to understand how people trained during this period and what meanings were attached to their training.
